Lander is known as the place "where the rails end and the trails begin" and is ranked as one of the best outdoor towns in America.  Lander's present name was chosen in 1875 in reference to General Frederick W Lander, a transcontinental explorer who surveyed the Oregon Trail's Lander Cutoff.  The parks and mountains offer hiking, climbing, fishing, and wildlife viewing.

Located in central Wyoming, Lander sits along the Middle Fork of the Popo Agie River. The river is 54 miles long and is part of the Popo Agie Watershed. From its headwaters in the Wind River Range until it joins with the North Fork of the Popo Agie River in the Wind River Basin, the river and its tributaries irrigate roughly 11,503 acres.
